NLP - What is NLP

What Is NLP?

NLP is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do. NLP provides people with a methodology to model outstanding performances achieved by geniuses and leaders in their field.

A key element of NLP is that we form our unique internal mental maps of the world as a product of the way we filter and perceive information absorbed through our five senses from the world around us.

  • Neuro: Each individual has established their own unique mental filtering system for processing the millions of bits of data being absorbed through the senses. Our first mental map of the world is constituted of internal images, sounds, tactile awareness, internal sensations, tastes and smells that form as result of the neurological filtering process. The first mental map is called ‘First Access’ in NLP.
  • Linguistic: We then assign personal meaning to the information being received from the world outside. We form our second mental map by assigning language to the internal images, sounds and feelings, tastes and smells, thus forming everyday conscious awareness. The second mental map is called the Linguistic Map (sometimes known as Linguistic Representation)
  • Programming: The behavioural response that occurs as a result of neurological filtering processes and the subsequent linguistic map.
So in short, NLP is a science of human understanding which can be use to achieve anything.

In today's World NLP is used in various fields like

'Feel good' decision making

Let me tell you a story of initial phase of my start up. Now you all know how start up works. In most of the cases there are ups and downs, its not exactly what we call a smooth run. (If it was a smooth run, will it be same fun?). At that point of time i was one among those people, who would easily get frustrated when things are not going as planned.. And guess what i was also one among the people, who take it out on others. (Common you have to agree, everyone have their time with it). One of the things, i got aware of while being in this phase was - every time when i got frustrated and took any decision - it was not on the productive side. For example, once i got so frustrated that i decided not to go ahead with the company. It was only the next morning when i realized that i had -what was i thinking?- time. So with this i realized whenever i was in 'a not so good state', i always made 'not so productive decisions'. And when i was in a good state i always made productive decisions.

Here is exercise for you

Step 1: - Every time you are about to make a decision ask this question to yourself .... How am i feeling? .. What are the feelings you are going through?
For example - IF you are about to make a decision to break up, just after you had a big fight with your girlfriend. Check with what emotion you are going to make that decision.
- If you are about to make a decision to not trust your co-workers just because some work is not being done. Check the emotion

Step 2: - If you realize, with however you are feeling, it's not useful to make the decision you are about to make, then make a choice - with what emotion you want to make that decision ?
For example - If you are deciding weather to break up or not, you may first decide to be in a more positive state and then make that decision. (May be happy/fun etc )

Step 3: - Get in your desired state - then make your decision.

Before you make any decision always have 'feel good' emotion. You will realize how amazingly it will help you to make a better decision.

Score turkey in Exams !!!

Have you ever hit 3 consecutive strikes in the Bowling ? .... Well ... when you do that, the graphics on the screen will say in BIG letters "congratulations you hit a Turkey".
Imagine how it would feel like having done that in your exams (of course metaphorically).

Two of the most important factors which plays the major part in getting better scores are BELIEFS and CONTEXT.

I am sure most of you know the story of a Rat and a Snake (True Story) . If you don't know then here it is...

Once upon a time there was a boy who was walking in the paddy fields of the country side. While he was walking and enjoying the serene around him, a snake bit him. He jumped and wondered what could have bitten him and that’s when he saw a tiny little rat next to his leg. “Ah! A small rat” the boy said and ignored his wound. He reached home and a good night sleep. The next morning he went back to the same paddy field and while walking, this time a rat bit him but surprisingly he looked down only to see a green nasty snake wriggling into the paddy. “Alas!! A snake has bitten me. What do I do?” he said and fell on the ground. He believed how will I survive this bite and in a few minutes he was dead.

So important thing here is to notice the fact that when this boy was bitten by a snake but saw a Rat passing by, he believed that he was bitten by Rat. As a result of which he survived. Same thing repeated again next day but this time he saw a snake passing by when bitten by a rat - He died.

So what you believe in to be real - will be real. And if you change your beliefs - you will change your reality

So even in studies its important to notice how believing that a specific goal is possible(getting above 80% or Topping university) will make it happen.

Second thing which plays an important part is the context from which we are operating. As i mentioned earlier, imagine your exam being the sport you love the most. I will take an example of cricket. Imagine writing your exam is equivalent to you scoring runs. Some of the questions you can ask yourself are - how much effort would you put in, to hit your first century? - How much would you practice everyday to score a century against the best team?

By shifting your context not only your score will improve but also while doing that you will have lot more fun doing that. Like find a partner and and check how can you create the most unbeatable partnership.

Here is the exercise that you can do

Step 1: - Set a Goal for yourself

Step 2: - On the scale of 1 -10 (10 being highest) check at what level do you believe that you will be able to achieve your Goal

If it is anything below 10 just answer this question - What needs to happen to make it 10 ?
Come up with at least 10 things that you can do to take your beliefs to level 10 and above.
(Some of the things that you can do is affirmations, create a study plan, have bench marks)

Step 3: - Relate studies to something that you really love doing. (sports, watching movies, listening to music, etc)
Here you make sure that you take it to micro levels in relating your favorite thing to studies.

Follow the process for at least one exam and get aware of how things shift for you to score better.

While following the process will help you to a massive extent we also conduct a workshop for the same which will change your perspective of exams and also install powerful beliefs. This workshop is also designed to remove your fears and unwanted emotions that stops you from getting your desired marks.

Affirmations

Using Affirmations are going to help you create small shifts that can create massive impact in your life...

I want you to know that, this process is not invented by me. I have merely shifted it in a way that i think will be useful. This process is done in different ways and for some people its useful to do it differently. I have attempted to create it in a way that will benefit you the most.

Before you carry on with the process i want you to read all the steps. When you use affirmations you will get an idea about the big picture - how doing this everyday for next 30 days will help you achieve the qualities you want for yourself. This will also help you create some strong beliefs that will in turn help you make those changes.

I am not making any promises for you to achieve anything, considering it will take for you to take action and follow the process regularly everyday. Only when you follow this steps, the process is gonna be effective.

Some of the steps may make you uncomfortable or you might find weird doing it. You might also not find yourself believing in it. Beliefs are not an issue. All we have to do is go ahead and follow the steps consistently.

By the end of the process, when it has made any difference to you I would like to know how this has helped you. So, any feedbacks are welcome.

What we are gonna do here is a process, which will help you create strong beliefs, and will help you to shift yourself from the person who you are to a person who you wanna be.

Before we move into the process, i would like you to get a pen and paper so that you can write down few of the things required.

Assuming, you have pen and paper by now, the step 1 would be to write the outcome you have in mind for yourself.

Step 1: - Write down the the qualities you want to achieve. This could be also in terms of the person you want to be.

For example: - Being more confident. Be able to do anything, Build rapport with anyone instateneously, Be more productive at work, Score good marks in exams.

Next step, would be to know what kind of beliefs you will need to have to achieve your outcomes easily

Step 2: -Write down the beliefs you think will be useful to have. Write atleast 5 different beliefs.

For example: - You can learn anything easily, You can talk to anyone about anything.

From this step you might think it's a little weird to go ahead with this, however i want you to go ahead, because there is a reason behind this which will be illustrated later.

Step 3: - Everyday morning as soon as you wake up, i want you to scream these beliefs to yourself ( you can either scream it out loud or shout it inside your head). You can also write it down on a chart and stick it so that you can see it everyday.

Step 4: - Once you are done screaming,Close our eyes, see yourself as the person already having these beliefs and changes. This is a critical one. When you are imagining yourself as the person, who has already got all the changes and powerful beliefs - observe, the changes you already see in yourself. How different are you looking? What kind of different feelings are you feeling? What kind of sound or music can you hear- when you are imagining yourself as the person who -already has- what you want. Write them down.

For example: - Imagine yourself learning effortlessly from reading a book or watching a video, Imagine yourself giving a presentation which everyone is enjoying.

Step 5: - When you notice the -changes in yourself- while imagining, implement those changes in your life,NOW.

Notice, in what ways have you shifted? .. Notice, by the end of 30th day, how automatically you become the person, that you wanted to be?
